Today's Reading: Leviticus 9
Leviticus 9:23 (NIV)“Moses and Aaron then went into the tent of meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people. ”
After the public consecration ceremony of God’s appointed priests, it was mandatory for Aaron and his sons to remain at the entrance of the tabernacle for a week to complete the ordination process. Moses made it clear if they failed to do what the Lord required they would die. (Leviticus 8:35)
However, if they obeyed the Lord’s commands, His glory would appear. (Leviticus 9:6)
On the eighth day, Aaron was ready for his first day on the job. As he stepped up to assume his role as high priest, the entire assembly gathered close to watch and wait. Can you imagine the exceptional care Aaron must have demonstrated as he prepared those very first offerings for himself and the people?
Worship in the Old Testament was not a quick and easy process. It was dignified and reverent. Worship took time, and God’s detailed instructions were to be followed exactly. As Aaron served the Lord and offered the sacrifices, his focus had to be on God and obeying His Word. He was ever mindful of the Lord’s holiness.
Unfortunately, in many places today, the focus of our worship is not on God or His Word. We focus on ourselves or what others are doing or wearing. We want our worship to be short and sweet so it doesn’t take too much time or effort. We are distracted, selfish and rushed with our worship. Not just corporately but in our hearts.
Real, authentic worship is about ascribing to God His true worth. It should never be about you or me.
Because Aaron obediently served the Lord, several significant things happened:
Aaron’s example of worship and service makes me stop and ask myself some important questions like:
As we rethink our worship, I wonder, “How differently would our corporate worship look if we determined to keep our focus on God and His Word? ”
Prayer: Holy Father, You alone are worthy of all glory and honor and praise. Help us turn our attention away from ourselves and back to You. May our deepest desire be to dwell in Your holy presence and make Your glory known. In Jesus’ name, amen.
The priesthood was a high and holy calling. Their service to God was to be carried out with devotion and integrity. As priests, the Levites were responsible to teach the people about God and show them how to worship. Read More
